Understanding Chronic Inflammation

Inflammation is the natural response of the immune system of the body to harmful stimuli like infection, injury or irritation. It is an important part of the body healing process and is characterized by redness, swelling, hotness, pain and reduced function.

Inflammation becomes an issue when it becomes chronic or long-term. Chronic inflammation is an indication that the body immune system is out of control and may be caused by;

·         A persistent source of irritation that is of low level or intensity.
·         A malfunctioning immune system: When the immune system thinks normal body tissues are               harmful and then attacks them.
·         Inability to eliminate the source on an acute inflammation and this produces more inflammation

Chronic inflammation may last for years and plays a role in causing diseases and conditions such as arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, diabetes, heart diseases, cancer, asthma, chronic sinusitis etc. In fact the list of ailments that have chronic inflammation as their root cause may be endless.

Learning how to keep chronic inflammation at bay is crucial to health especially for those suffering from diseases caused by it. A good understanding of your body, what triggers your  inflammation and the things that reduce it is also important in dealing with chronic inflammation.
