Jute, called Corchorus olitorius, is a green leafy edible vegetable that is prepared into a slimy soup called ewedu in South West Nigeria. It is also known by other names like ahihiara, saluyot, rama. Jew mallow etc.

Jute is a good vegetable to include in your daily diet because it is rich in numerous minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. It contains iron, calcium, sodium, phosphorus, potassium, proteins, fibers, Vitamins A, C and E, riboflavin, niacin and folate. These are nutrients that help the body to fight diseases and maintain good health.

5 Good Reasons to Eat Ewedu.

·         It has anti-aging properties.
·         It lowers blood pressure, cholesterol and is good for heart health and diabetes.
·         It is a blood purifier and laxative.
·         It improves eyesight.
·         Increases fertility and aids easy delivery in pregnant women.

The cold compress of jute can also be used medicinally to reduce fever. It has been used well in Ayurveda for years to treat pain, piles, ascites and tumours.

We have been eating this vegetable without knowing its wonderful nutritional and medicinal properties. Keep on eating your ewedu with oat swallow for a healthy meal.
