Eating Vegetables to Lower Eye Pressure.


Chronic high pressure of the eyes leads to glaucoma which is a group of disorders that damage the
optic nerves of eyes. Glaucoma can lead to decreased vision and blindness. It is one of the causes of blindness. There is a high risk of glaucoma for people:

·         Whose close family member has glaucoma.
·         Dealing with diabetes.
·         Over sixty.

Regulating eye pressure is the key to preventing glaucoma or blindness. Magnesium is a mineral that helps with lowering eye pressure and it is present in most green vegetables. Green leafy vegetables are also rich in antioxidants which protect body and eye cells from oxidative damage.
Eating leafy greens help in protecting the body against a lot of diseases including eye damage from glaucoma. Below are leafy greens easily available in Nigeria:

African spinach, Amaranthus hybridus, efo tete.
Fluted pumpkin, Telfaria occidental, ugwu.
African jointfir, Gnetum latifolium, ukazi, afang.
Lagos spinach, Colosia argentia, shoko yokoto.
Vegetable jute, Corchorus olitorius, ewedu, ahihiara.
Bush buck, Gongronema latifolim, utazi, arokeke.
Beletientien, Heinsia crinita, atama.
Water leaf, Talinum triangular, gbure.
False cubeb, Piper guineeses, uziza.
Fireweed, thickhead, Crassocephalum rubens, ebolo.
And of course, Moringa oleifera.

There are other vegetables not mentioned here including those that are not indigenous to Nigeria that are equally good.

Continue to prepare your efo riro, edikang ikong, atama, oha, afang soups and eat your way to good health.
