Using Alum for Healing Purposes.

Alum is the crystal of potassium aluminium sulfate and it is a naturally occurring substance. It has been used all over the world for different health, hair and skin healing purposes. In Nigeria, it has been commonly used to clean snails and purify water.

Alum is used because it has antibacterial, astringent and emetic properties. Alum also has deodorant and odour removal properties. Because of these properties, it has been used in the following ways.

   1.        To purify water.
   2.        To treat wounds and injuries.
   3.        To stop bleeding.
   4.        As an aftershave.
   5.        As a mouthwash and for mouth odour.
   6.        As a natural deodorant against body odour.
   7.        For acne, pimples and other skin conditions.
   8.       To shrink hemorrhoids.
   9.        Used in skin lightening lotions.
  10.      Used to induce vomiting after ingesting poison.
  11.      To soothe itchy and irritated skin.
  12.      As a nasal rinse.
  13.      For cracked heels.
  14.      To reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
  15.      To treat canker sores.
  16.      To remove unwanted facial hair.

Alum is very cheap and its other uses have been largely ignored. It is handy to keep a block or some pieces of alum in the house for first aid.
