We all hate
mosquitoes with a passion and fear them too! Mosquitoes are the deadliest
animals in the world and also take the title of ‘Wanted Dead or Alive”. Mosquitoes
are estimated to be responsible for about one million deaths each year by
infecting about 400 million people with malaria fever, dengue fever, West Nile
Virus and some other diseases. Despite the fact that they cause us humans a lot
of suffering, they are also important in the ecosystem they live in. Since we
cannot get rid of them, we have to protect ourselves against them with
repellents.
Most of the
popular mosquito repellents that fill supermarkets contain DEET (diethyl-meta-toluamide)
and picardin as active components and these have their own side effects after
prolonged use.
You can make
your own mosquito repellents easily with natural products around you that are
gentle on your body and have no effects on your health. Here is a list of some herbs,
spices, flowers and plants you can use on your body, spray in your homes,
gardens or surrounding:
Lemon Juice Lemongrass
Garlic Orange
Peel
Peppermint Black
Pepper Oil
Spearmint Eucalyptus
Lavender Basil
Oil
Neem Catnip
Cedar Soy
Oil
Wormwood Citronella
Cinnamon Thyme
Planting
some herbs like the mints around you will repel mosquitoes. A recipe from my
childhood is burning dried orange peels when sitting outdoors. Below is a
recipe.
Ingredients
Herbs; Basil,
Lemongrass, Neem, Thyme
Carrier
Liquid; Alcohol, Apple Cider Vinegar, Lemon Juice
Preparation Method
1) Chop up or mince the herbs and put in
a glass jar.
2) Cover with your carrier liquid,
leaving some space on top.
3) Seal the jar tightly with the lid.
4) Leave in outdoors in the sun for two
weeks, shaking daily.
5) Strain and put the liquid in a spray
bottle.
Another recipe
to rub on the body is this;
1) Put chopped herbs in a jar
2) Cover with a natural carrier oil
(coconut, olive, sunflower etc.)
3) Seal the jar and leave for two weeks,
shaking daily
4) Strain into a bottle.
Using these
natural ingredients, have fun watching these pesky pests flee from you.
