The Secret Ingredient to Healthy Living.

Have you ever wondered why doctors, dietitians, nutritionists and other health professionals advise individuals with chronic health issues to eat lots of fruits and vegetables?  Don’t you wonder why most of my posts mention antioxidants?  The reason is because they contain chemical substances called ANTIOXIDANTS in abundance.

In simple terms, antioxidants are substances that inhibit the action of free radicals or oxidants in the body cells. Free radicals are produced by:

·         Normal body functions such as food breakdown.
·         Pollution.
·         UV Light and Radiation.
·         Alcohol Intake.
·         Sun Exposure
·         Drugs.
·         Stress.
·         Infections.

Free radicals play a big role in diseases because they cause cellular damage which lead to many diseases and health issues. Our bodies produce some antioxidants in form of enzymes but most must come from what we consume. As we become older, our bodies produce more free radicals.

Incorporating foods and herbs that are high in antioxidants is the secret to improving overall health, fighting diseases and having the following benefits:

Reduce High Blood Pressure.
Boost the Immune System
Improve Colon Health.
Fight Aging.
Improve Heart Health.
Decrease the Chances of Cancer Development.
Fight Autoimmune Diseases, Chronic Allergies, Diabetes, Kidney Diseases, Depression, Obesity and in fact, the list of the disease fighting benefits of antioxidants is endless.

Antioxidants abound in all foods especially:
Fruits; brightly coloured fruits like strawberries, grapes, oranges, lemons etc.
Vegetables; tomatoes, peppers, dark leafy vegetables etc
Herbs.
Spices.
Legumes
Nuts and Seeds.
Vitamins (A and E).

Simply including antioxidants in our diets will definitel y provide the secret ingredient to good health, long life and wellness. A post about foods high in antioxidants will be written soon.
