Orange peels are mostly discarded or used in composts but
they have a lot of fantastic uses for health, beauty, cleaning and other
purposes. Orange peels are rich in antioxidants, natural antihistamines,
Vitamins A and C, minerals, fibers, enzymes and pectin. Below are some of the things orange peels can be used for.
1.
For Health: Orange peels are good for the lungs
by providing support against respiratory distress. It also breaks down and
expels phlegm. Orange peels contain natural antihistamines which combat
allergies, without any side effects. They also help in relieving respiratory
health conditions like asthma, cold, flu and cough. You can add some orange
peels to hot water in a bowl and use to steam your face.
2.
Beauty, Skin and Hair: Because orange peels
contain Vitamin C, enzymes and calcium which are good for having a glowing
skin, use orange peel powder as a mask to;
·
Rid your face of pimples, acne, blackheads.
·
Lighten and tone your skin.
·
Remove dark spots and freckles.
·
Prevent your skin from being oily.
·
Prevent wrinkles
3.
Deodorizer:
The acids in orange peels will neutralize odours in garbage cans, musty
closets, refrigerators, freezers, homes and smelly shoes.
·
For garbage cans, simply put some peels at the
bottom of the can.
·
For musty closets, put some powdered form in a sachet
and hang in the closet.
·
For homes, put some dry powder in sachets or
bowls around the house.
·
For smelly shoes, put a sachet of powder in the
shoes and leave for a while.
4.
Insect Repellent: Mosquitoes, ants, flies and
other insects hate the smell of limonene. Make an orange peel spray by steeping
a fistful of orange peel powder and 200ml vinegar in a jar for two weeks. Mix
with some water in a spray bottle and spray around you or on yourself. Placing peels
or peel powder where you have insects also drives them away. Burning dried
peels outdoors chases insects away.
5.
Stain Remover and Cleaner: Orange peels are good
for removing oil stains, water stains and scum from glassware and silverware.
You can use them to clean counter tops, sinks, glass cups, glass table tops and
the microwave. Using them for cleaning also leaves a nice tangy smell.
Orange peel has many more uses than one can imagine and it is
totally free. I see a lot of peels being discarded around and we are being
bitten by mosquitoes every night! Next time you peel oranges, keep some or all
the peel to use.
