The tonsils are lymph nodes on both sides of the throat. Tonsillitis
is the inflammation of the tonsils from mostly a viral infection and sometimes
a bacterial infection. The common symptoms of tonsillitis include;
- Difficulty in swallowing.
- Pain.
- Headache.
- Fever.
- Tenderness of the areas around the throat.
- Bad breath.
- Swelling of the throat.
- Sore throat.
- Nausea.
- Vomiting.
There are several home remedies that are effective to;
- Fight the infection.
- Manage or reduce the pain.
- Reduce other symptoms.
The herbs or ingredients that are needed to treat tonsillitis
should have the following properties;
- Antimicrobial.
- Anti-inflammatory.
- Fever reducing.
- Pain killing.
Some home remedies for tonsillitis.
- Salt has antimicrobial properties. Mix 1 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and use to gargle at least 3 times daily. Warm water soothes the throat and reduces inflammation.
- Garlic has antibacterial, antifungal, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. Grate some garlic cloves and mix with some warm water to use in gargling often.
- Alum has astringent, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Dissolve some alum in warm water and use to gargle.
- Turmeric has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. You can make a tea by adding hot water to a teaspoon of grated turmeric or turmeric powder.
- Lemon and lime have antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also rich in vitamin C which promotes healing. Drink lemon or lime juice either hot or cold. You can also add to teas.
- Onion has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Juice some onion and mix some of the juice with warm water and use to gargle often.
- Apple cider vinegar has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Dilute some apple cider vinegar with some warm water and use to gargle at least 3 times daily.
- Cinnamon has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Add one teaspoon of cinnamon powder to one cup of hot water to make tea. Drink at least 3 times daily.
- Basil has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. Squeeze some basil juice or boil some leaves in water to make tea.
- Ginger has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Grate some ginger root and add boil in water. Allow to cool a bit until warm and use to gargle at least 3 times daily.`
- Foods with mucilage are easy to swallow, soothe inflamed membranes and have anti-inflammatory properties. Good mucilaginous foods include slippery elm, African wild mango seeds, African food gum, etc.
You can use a combination of the ingredients above for gargling
or tea.
It is best to eat liquid foods that are easy to swallow.
Drink lots of liquids hot or cold to provide relief. It is important to have a
lot of rest.
