We have been warned consistently not to eat chicken skin if we don't want to gain weight or have cholesterol and heart issues. Some of us really love chicken skin, which can be
crunchy when fried. The main issue is that chicken fat is mainly found attached
to the skin.
Here are some facts you need to consider when buying chicken if
you want to enjoy the skin:
- Chicken fat is made up of more polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids than saturated fatty acids. Unsaturated fats are actually health for the body and promote heart health, so eating some fat from chicken may not contribute to heart health issues, but weight gain. This is because all fats provide 9 calories/gram so if you are trying to lose weight, it is better not to eat too much fat.
- The parts of chicken referred to as dark like thighs have more fat than the white parts like breast.
- Some chicken contain more fat than others. Most big sized chicken are broilers which have been raised to produce maximum amount of meat in a short time. They are fed high caloric meals for up to 24 hours a day with no exercise, so they become obese and have a higher fat content. On the other hand, our local free-range chickens are healthier because of the way they have been bred even though they lose out on size.
If you do not want to consume fat from chicken for any
reason, steer clear of those fat chickens
(orobo) and buy those with less fat,
especially the layers. Chicken fat is also what you can see when cutting, so
trim it off during cleaning. However, chicken fat helps to give chicken more
flavour and keeps it moist and juicy during cooking.
It’s your choice! Buy leaner hens and enjoy the skin and
more goodness or buy orobo fat chicken and remove the skin. Eating skin without the fat is definitely not an issue!
