Exercises That Sharpen Your Brain As You Age.


Growing older is hard and it comes with a reduction in cognitive skills. Memory lapses, forgetfulness
and age related memory loss increase with age. The ability to recall performing basic actions is called prospective memory can also worsen to the level that an older adult may need assistance with his or her activities of daily living. This may lead to the loss of their independence.

The brain never stops to produce new cells but like muscles, if they are not used, they reduce in function. This is why it is very important to get involved in mental activities which stimulate the brain and also improve cognitive skills. Mental challenges make you think more and use your brain more. A lot of times, we do not need medications or herbs for some medical issues but
just therapy, exercise or lifestyle changes. Playing games is healthy for your mind and brain. Games also make the mind more active.  Below are some games and activities that can help with exercising the brain.
  • Crossword puzzles.
  • Sudoku.
  • Draft.
  • Chess.
  • Monopoly.
  • Bingo.
  • Music and singing.
  • Solitaire.
  • Jigsaw puzzles.

There is no greater thing than boredom or dullness that kills your cognitive skills, get involved in good activities and maybe socialize more.  Involving older adults daily in games is very important because it  can help them retain their independence longer. Eating well, sleeping well and exercising regularly are strong pillars that will uphold your mental, physical, psychological and cognitive well being. Involvement in game activities that engage many people playing at once improve social skills.

It is however important to recognize normal memory loss from the onset of diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological disorders. But always remember that the more you use your brain, the more you keep it working fine and the more you are able to keep memory issues away.
