Pygeum africanum and Prunus africanum are the two botanical
names of an evergreen tree that is native to African forests. It bears red
berries which are bitter in taste and is more commonly called African plum
tree, African cherry tree, bitter almond tree, African prune tree, stinkwood
and iron wood. It is also called by many local names where it grows. In Nigeria
it is called emi or olowomefa in Yoruba, ka’danya in Hausa, osisi in Igbo.
Pygeum Africana tree bark is the most popularly used part for
medicine because it is used to treat prostate and urinary tract issues. Pygeum
bark has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
