Any wild plant that grows where it is not wanted and
competes for food with cultivated plants is considered to be weed while grass
refers to plants with narrow green leaves that are usually eaten by sheep,
cows, horses and other ruminants.
A lot of plants that we consider to be weed or grass are
actually safe and delicious to consume or use as medicine. You can use some for
food, juice, teas, infusions and topical remedies. They are useful simply because
they are first and foremost PLANTS and so contain nutrients and active
components.
Below are 10 common weeds that are perfectly useful:
- Wheat grass.
- Dandelion leaves, roots and flowers.
- Nettle leaves, roots, stems and flowers.
- Burdock root.
- Wild amaranth or pigweed (Efo abalaiye)
- Watercress.
- Chickweed.
- Goat weed.
- Oat grass.
- Siam weed/Awolowo weed/Akintola weed.
The leaves of some grasses cannot be digested by us but we
use their seeds, grains or juice as in the case of cereals. Some may contain
anti-nutrients that cooking or some other forms of processing will remove.
It is however important to identify a plant properly before
using it for food or medicine. It is very likely that some plants that grow around
you that you consider to be weeds are actually packed with fantastic nutrients and
medicine.
